A status report on crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh prepared by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, Shefali Misra and Hema Badhwar Mehra (party’s Lok Sabha candidates from Sitapur and Badaun constituencies in UP, respectively), has been presented to the AAP national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal. Receiving the report, he condemned the increasing violence against women, calling the situation a “gross neglect of basic human rights.”
Kejriwal asked for a serious review of women’s situation in the country, expressing that, “The mandate to stop violence is a responsibility each one of us now needs to take.” He further added that, “the state has failed in its endeavour to protect women’s rights. It is time that each citizen expresses anguish and anger and lets the law makers and implementers know that violence must stop.”
News reports appearing in some newspapers suggest that one of the accused arrested in the case is a close relative of a prominent Delhi BJP leader and since the Delhi Police reports directly to union home ministry, therefore the apprehension of undue influence to dilute the case cannot be ruled out. What is more disturbing is that BJP leaders are already giving statements to show the gruesome incident as a case of road rage, which is completely uncalled for, since the case is at investigation stage. Neha's case is a sordid tale of policy apathy, insensitivity and police callousness . She was being tortured by her husband and in-laws (in Indra Park, Sagarpur, West Delhi) but the police chose to turn a blind eye to her repeated complaints resulting into the gruesome incident of her being burnt by her husband and in-laws on January 13, but even this could not move the callous police. This piece brings out the details of the gory incident of rape & murder in Badayun, UP.
This is the result of a systemic rot. It has happened before –maybe not in this defiant and intrusive way that challenged everything that existed, mocked every law ever made – but it has happened and it will continue to happen unless the caste divide disappears, unless laws change, unless education imparts what it is meant to impart, unless politicians care enough, unless men are sensitised, unless our rural areas begin to permeate into the active conscience of a society consisting of people like us who think that it is made only for us and till as such time as we see all of India as one, without this great divide and understand at a seminal level that this country belongs, in equal measure, to all of its citizens, at all times. The Aam Aadmi Party strongly condemns the role of Bihar Police in shielding the culprits who attempted to rape the party’s candidate from Buxar Lok Sabha constituency, Dr Shweta Pathak. The incident reflects the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, where the hoodlums who attempted to rape a 33 year-old medical doctor last week are still at large.
What can be more shameful than the role played by the state police in the entire matter ? The police instead of nabbing the culprits who tried to commit a heinous crime in broad daylight, brutally beat up Dr Pathak in the police station. Read More
The BJP-led NDA’s central government and the Lieutenant Governor, through whom it is controlling Delhi, both need to tell the people of the national capital, with whom does the buck stop for the current chaotic situation in the city which has virtually thrown life out of gear.
People are being subjected to endless harassment in all spheres of life – ranging from rapidly deteriorating law and order situation reflected in the alleged rape of two foreign nationals, widespread confusion in admission to various colleges of the Delhi University, complete failure of the corrupt and inefficient Municipal Corporations of Delhi in saving innocent lives due to collapse of unsafe buildings and the inability of the union power ministry and city authorities in ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply in this torrid heat.
The absence of an elected government in Delhi is being used as an excuse by the BJP-led government to run it without any accountability and through the LG, the central government is trying mindless experiments to play with lives of the people. Read More
